doption is a permanent legal arrangement. It involves permanently relinquishing your legal parental relationship so that your child’s adoptive parents will have full and exclusive parental rights and responsibilities.
Placing your child for adoption is a big decision to make. The final consent order may not be signed until baby is at least 12 days old.
Under current law in New Zealand, Oranga Tamariki (Ministry for Children) must be involved with the process. A Social Worker will be allocated to you, and another Social Worker will be allocated to the adoptive parents. There will also need to be a lawyer involved to deal with the legal documents necessary. The adoptive parents typically pay these costs.
A good Pregnancy Centre can help provide you with baby clothes, equipment, referrals to other organisations, and can journey with you as you learn about parenthood. This is on a case-by-case basis, so please get in touch with one of our recommended centres for help in this area.
There are also many other organisations who are able to provide practical, emotional, informative, and financial help.

Living In Colour programme
A healing and recovery programme for women who have experienced abortion. Abortion-related grief remains something of a taboo topic in our society – and so it can be difficult to process the emotional impact or to find a sense of closure. The unresolved loss can show up in many ways, including depression, anger, relationship difficulties, anxiety and substance abuse. Sometimes, it does not surface till decades later. Living in Colour is an eight-week course which has been used successfully in many countries around the world. It gently helps you process what was happening for you at the time, who was involved and the emotional impact of the decision. The final chapter celebrates the process of emerging from the ‘grey zone’ of unresolved loss into a life of greater colour and freedom.
